Universal Account Number (UAN) is important for EPF account holders as the entire process related to the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) services are now operated online. Thanks to UAN, accessing your PF account services like withdrawal, checking EPF balance without the help of an employer, and PF loan application is easy. This article covers everything about your Universal Account Number.

Universal Account Number or UAN

The Universal Account Number or UAN is a 12-digit unique number assigned to every employee contributing to the EPF. It is generated and allotted by the  Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO)  and authenticated by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. The UAN of an employee remains the same throughout his life irrespective of the number of jobs they change.

Every time an employee switches their job, EPFO allots a new member identification number or EPF Account (ID) linked to the UAN. As an employee, one can request a new member ID by submitting the UAN to the new employer. Once the member ID is created, it gets linked to the UAN of the employee. Hence, the UAN will act as an umbrella for the multiple member IDs allotted to the employee by different employers.

The UAN remains the same and portable throughout the life of an employee. The employee shall have a different member ID when switching between jobs. All such member IDs are linked to the employee’s UAN to ease the process of EPF transfers and withdrawals.

How to Know Your UAN?

Through your employer

Generally, you are allotted a Universal Account Number by your employer as per the EPFO. Some employers print the UAN number in the salary slips too.

How to Obtain UAN for EPF

An employer must register on EPFO if there are 20 or more employees. If the old employer has already assigned the UAN, the employee should provide such details to the new employer. However, for employees joining the service for the first time, the eacmployer needs to generate the UAN for the employee. To generate a new UAN for the employee, the employer has to follow the below steps:

  1. Sign in to  Employer’s EPF Portal  using the ID and password
  2. In the ‘Member’ section and click on the tab ‘ Register Individual’ ,
  3. Enter the employee’s details such as Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, Aadhaar, etc.
  4. Approve all details in the ‘ Approval’  section.
  5. EPFO generates a new UAN of the employee, and the employer can link the PF account with the UAN of the employee.

The employee should follow the below steps to link UAN with Aadhaar:

Step 1:  Log in to the  EPFO portal  and click on ‘UAN Member e-Sewa’ under ‘For Employees’.

Step 2:  Enter UAN, password, and Captcha to Sign in to the portal.

Step 3:  Under the ‘Manage’ tab on the top panel, click on ‘KYC’

Step 4:  Tick the check box in front of Aadhaar, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and name, and save the details.

Step 5:  After submitting, your details will reflect under the ‘Pending KYC’ tab. Once the employer approves, it will reflect under the ‘Approved KYC’ tab (It will generally take 15 days for approval).

Linking your Aadhaar to the EPF account will help in faster processing of the  withdrawal  and transfer process. The present employer should approve and verify the KYC, including the employee’s Aadhaar details.
